The first 17 verses of the second chapter of Acts tell a fantastic tale of the Holy Spirit’s first appearance, descending to Jews, Gentiles and a United-Nations-like gathering of immigrants and internationals assembled in Jerusalem amid an old Jewish festival. The Spirit equips them to speak each in their own language but understand each other and hear the same proclamation of God’s presence and power in the world in this new form. We will approach this story with some basic questions to unpack it for a new understanding, paying particular attention to the connection of the Holy Spirit and our prayer life.
Worship will include other gifts, including the the baptism of Grace Jordan (the beautiful daughter of Maggie and Bo), the first Caldwell inter-generational choir and a chance to say ‘thank you’ to all those who teach our children. Before worship, the Adult Christian Education (ACE) class continues its conversation about the risen Christ and Caldwell House breakfast is at 8:30.
Tomorrow, however, we gather for fun and fellowship at the annual picnic at Veteran’s Park from 12:30 to 5, with the afternoon meal around 3. Bring a friend and don’t miss this chance to spend some down time with members and friends. Come to meet some of our newest members, if you haven’t yet. Rev. Everdith (Evie) Landrau, our newly named associate pastor, will be there as well.
Then, Sunday night at 7, the fun continues as the Caldwell House women present the first Caldwell Fashion Parade at 7 in Belk Hall (the gym). The ladies have worked hard and it should be a wonderful and light-hearted way to wind down the weekend. Phanta Lansden says a couple of men are needed to help set up. If you can help around 5:30, please call her at 704 351 2315.
Several members and friends request prayers:
- Kim Bohannon, whose mother faces difficult surgery Tuesday.
- Stephen Idol and his family, following Stephen suffering a seizure.
- Troy Bowles (eye)
- Herb McKinney and his wife (her health)
- Abong Fankam and Diane Mowrey as they lead Queens University students on overseas trips
- Beth Van Gorp’s father, Dirk (heart)
- Carol Outwater and her mother
- Daisy Oatman and family
- Chris Skibinski and Erin Dougherty, who were wed Friday night
- And … The Denison Family as they settle in at home with newborn son, Micah.
May God grant you rest and peace this weekend, even amid the joyfully busy activities for us to enjoy together.
In Christ,
John
