Dear Caldwell,

As we lead up to Discipleship Commitment Sunday this Sunday, each of us is called to think prayerfully and intentionally about how we can join God with our financial resources and abilities to “exhibit the Kingdom of Heaven to the world,”  in other words, loving our neighbor as we love ourselves. As you review the materials all members and friends should have received in the mail, the question may arise: How does all this relate to the ongoing Caldwell in 3D visioning process?

As you know, more than 150 members and friends gathered in small groups over the summer to discuss some of the biggest questions and opportunities facing our busy little church. The Dream Team is at work reviewing those notes and moving toward an articulation of our shared vision. Your Session and pastors see 2014 as a bit of a transition year. No doubt, we will see some opportunities seized upon right away. Other, deeper opportunities may take some time for the church to assess and act on.

But the work of ministry goes on! So we ask that you review the Time and Talent “Discipleship 2013-2014” booklet with this quote from Christian writer Frederick Buechner in mind: “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” Where do you feel called to serve with deep gladness for God’s grace? How is God calling you to examine your financial resources in light of the world’s deep hunger?

Our opportunity to serve God together is also worth celebrating. So, on Saturday from 4-7 pm, we will gather for fish and fellowship in one of our most popular events of the year. Bring a veggie or dessert around 4. The meal will be served at 5.

On Sunday, please bring your pledge cards in the sealed envelopes and we will dedicate them in worship.

A few other church notes:

  • Jackie Abernethy continues her rehab work at Old Knox Commons in Huntersville. If you want to call, the main number there is (704) 897-2700. If you would like to drop her a card, the address is 13825 Hunton Ln, Huntersville, NC 28078.
  • Don’t forget the new Sunday Night Series that starts this Sunday at 6 pm in the Shelby Room. Parish Associate Minister Diane Mowrey will lead a conversation about a book titled Toxic Charity, by a layleader who devoted his life to serving those in need and learned first-hand the difference between good charity and bad.
  • Next week, Caldwell is hosting two public events that may interest you. On Tuesday night at 6pm, Clean Air Carolina will hold a citizens’ hearing on new carbon emission rules. Read more here :  http://cleanaircarolina.org/?p=7412 On Wednesday night at 7 pm, several organizations are hosting a conversation about the political impact of gerrymandering and what might be changed. Both events are in the sanctuary.

I’ll be back in touch before Sunday.
In Christ,
John
