Dear Caldwell,
As the hours wind down on 2010, no doubt many of us are taking stock. Yesterday, I overheard a fellow say, “I am ready for 2010 to be over with. I need a better 2011.” More than a few among us can identify with that sentiment; it’ s been a tough time lately for several folks in the Caldwell community who have lost jobs or loved ones or relationships. For them, we pray for a better 2011 and we give thanks that we all are part of a church community to support us through good times and bad.
Regardless of how 2010 treated us – and for most of us it’s been a mix – we are people of hope, which is different and deeper than plain optimism. Our hope is articulated in the opening lines of the book of Hebrews, “in these last days God has spoken to us in a Son, whom God appointed heir of all things.” The secular calendar turns over to 2011 tonight but the Christian New Year began weeks ago with Advent and our hope-ful living goes on. So, Happy New Year #2.Every year on the last day of the year, the Charlotte Observer selects outstanding citizen servants. Who better than one of this year’s selection, Caldwell member George Michie. George is recognized for his remarkable community volunteerism and, as always, he offers a prophetic word in something he says in the article. To read it, check it out at http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/12/31/1944442/thank-you.html. Way to go, George. Thanks be to God for you.
This Sunday, we have the treat of a sermon from Rev. Elizabeth Hyland, titled “A Grace-full Resolution.” Her scripture is Exodus 3:1-6 and Philippians 4:1-9. She will invite us to see the world a bit differently in 2011.
We have a few folks to keep in prayer and in our thoughts. Beverly Bryan-Nance underwent surgery Wednesday to remove a growth from her neck. She is at home recovering and will be without the ability to speak for a few days. Jimmy Todd took a spill on the ice earlier in the week and banged up his eye socket. He looks better every day and we’re grateful he was not hurt worse.
Are you needing something new in your life for 2011, something that provides perspective, something that feeds you for the rest of the week? Why not start the new year by making Sunday school a part of your weekly walk? This Sunday, the class will be a general discussion of resolutions in 2011 and the following Sunday we will begin a study of the book of Joshua.
Finally, if you paid for a poinsettia, there are a few left. We have give many away to bright others’ lives but please feel free to take one of the remainders Sunday. They will be on the table in the hall behind the sanctuary.
May the God who does more than we can ever ask or imagine shower blessings and grace on you and yours in 2011 … and far beyond.
In Christ,
John
