Dear Caldwell,
Having heard news updates on Irene all day, I find myself thinking back 20 years ago to when Hugo came calling. I’d just worked a 15-hour day in the Observer newsroom, chasing down the facts after a Charlotte-bound flight ran off the end of the runway at Laguardia Airport and nosing into the Hudson River. I’d not had much time to watch the weather. I went to bed late and exhausted when Hugo barrelled through. Eight hours later the phone rang. It was my editor, telling me to get back into the newsroom however I could. Hugo wound up being one of those, “Where were you?” moments for Charlotte. Let us hope and pray for better things this weekend for the coastline.
What does one pray on the eve of a weekend of such potentially damaging and dangerous storms? We can start by praying for strength and wisdom for all those whose jobs involve planning for and responding to such storms and, more urgently, the safety of all of those who are in harm’s way. We will have to see what the weekend brings the East Coast, but let us pray for all those whose lives will be affected.
Here at Caldwell, we have a big birthday to celebrate. Jackie Abernathy is turning 90, thanks be to God. All who RSVP’d to prior notes on this will join her the family for a reception/party for her tomorrow at 3 in the Fellowship Hall. We’ll also celebrate her a little in worship with the help of our kids.
Earlier Saturday, we’re still in need of a few able bodies to help move 11 of the bunks in Caldwell House. That opportunity starts at 9:30 a.m. It won’t take long and is a great way to help out at Caldwell House.
In worship Sunday, we will take a look at the familiar “Burning Bush” story in which God reveals God’s identity as “I am who I am.” (Exodus 3:1-15) Reassuring words for the ages? Doubespeak to an already confused world? Something else to you? Come and join the discussion. In Sunday school, we will take a look at a confessional prayer by Daniel (9:3-19).
I hope the weekend will bring you rest and, for all those on the East Coast, safety.
In Christ,
John
