Community “in Christ” – Take Two

Caldwell Family:

Like you, I am sure, I am looking forward to the forecasted break in the weather tomorrow. I hope you have some rest and renewal planned for the weekend.

I’ve continued to think this week about what it means to be a community “in Christ,” the subject of my blog earlier this week. Part of it, as I will say in my sermon, is being aware, open, attentive. About this, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote:

“If we do not give thanks daily for the Christian fellowship …. if on the contrary we only keep complaining to God that everything is so paltry and petty, so far from what we expected, then we hinder God from letting our fellowship grow according to the measure and riches which are there for us all in Jesus Christ.”

I hear many of you give thanks every week for our fellowship here at Caldwell. So it’s not that we fail necessarily in that regard. But how do we know if we are doing all we can do to be a community “in Christ” amid our hectic, distracted lives?

On Sunday, we will take a look at what the author of Colossians said about that admittedly abstract-sounding concept. We will also be fed for our journey as we celebrate communion and the session will meet immediately after worship to receive anyone who has been thinking about joining the congregation. Lots to look forward to. See you then, I hope. John
