Dear Mayor Roberts,

Just a note of thanks for the work of the city water crew who came out to repair a burst pipe under the street next to Caldwell.

We had guests coming, you see, so we were in a jam.

We’re having some new friends for dinner Thursday at 6, members of  St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church. Belk Hall had no water. So you can imagine that we were getting a little nervous.

As you may also know (we love it when you worship here) our members grow vegetables for the hungry. The burst pipe cut off water to our garden and the veggies and herbs were looking pretty puny.

Thankfully, the guys with the city were here this morning. They dug up the street, found the leak (about a pencil’s width in a 2-inch pipe, I’m told), fixed it and covered back up the hole. I didn’t get their names but they worked hard until the problem was solved (I do know the zone manager who came out and got the crew here was a guy named Al).

It’s hard, dirty work they do, literally “the dirty work” of the city that so many city employees do every day – picking up our garbage, fixing potholes, driving buses, repairing busted pipes and so many other “invisible jobs” right around us. It’s not glamorous but these public servants do their jobs with dignity. They have my respect, and I wanted you to know of our church’s gratitude.

We appreciate all you do in our city for folks like these and so many others whom you speak up for every day.  If you’re free, we’d love for you to join us for dinner Thursday at 6. But we know you are very busy.

Again, thank you and all who serve our city at every level for such the well-run place we call home.

In Christ,

John
