Has Christ been divided?

Dear Caldwell,

The question above jumps out of the lectionary reading for this Sunday from the book of 1 Corinthians (1:10-18). Just last week, those who were able to be in worship with us on Sunday held hands at the close of  the service and sang, “We shall overcome.” It was a well-timed tonic. Since then, we’ve been reminded that, as a city at least, we still have some overcoming to do in the area racial dialogue and mutual understanding. The question – “Has Christ been divided?” – was how the apostle Paul led the conversation about unity amid diversity in his day.  It’s just as relevant for us in ours and, for us Christians, there is a clear mandate.

In addition to exploring that question and mandate, this Sunday’s worship will include a brief but informative meeting of the congregation. This annual meeting, part of  our by-laws, will include a state-of-the church snapshot and other timely reports, including a look at the proposed 2011 church budget. While there is always more to do, we all are blessed to be part of a healthy and committed church family. Come and here more.

The adult Sunday school class will continue with its new study of the book of Joshua.

Another part of being ‘family’ to each other is being aware of those who need our prayers:

– Elaine Hultman has been admitted to CMC with some intenstinal inflammation. She will be there a few days and asks for our prayers.

– Nancy Nance has  experienced some issues involving balance and stamina. She has begun to undergo some tests.

– Beth Van Gorp’s father is experiencing some seizures and will be undergoing tests.

Having been down with a nasty case of the flu for the last 48 hours, I have new appreciation and sympathy for all those who wake up in the morning feeling less than their best. Let us be thankful that, whatever we face, we rest in the arms of the one we call The Great Physician.

See you Sunday, I hope.

John
