Dear Caldwell,
What choices do we make when we lose our nerve? Do our values and principles go out the window when we doubt God? Where do we put our faith – in something of our own making or in a God who keeps promises?
Those questions lie at the center of this week’s passage in Exodus, as we move toward the end of the story. One minute, the Israelites promise God, “All that Yahweh has said we will do, and we will be obedient.” Then, when Moses ascends the mountain to be with God, they cry out, “Make us a god!” (That’s with a little “g.”)
Yup, it’s the lesson of the Golden Calf, and it resonates remarkably well with our own times and our own lives. It asks questions about our tendency to create our own idols and how we find the faith, patience and trust to wait on God when our prayers aren’t answered on our time. The key chapter is Exodus 32.
THANK YOU!
Last week’s “Commitment Sunday” was a big success as we continue in Stewardship Season! So far, we have received 113 pledges, totaling about $389,000. That’s equal to 91% of our 2019 budget. What a terrific encouragement and testament!
We will need to gather in a bit more to make possible our full vision and opportunity to serve our city next year. The good news is that we have yet to hear from some of you and there is still time to get a pledge in. You can bring it Sunday, use a pledge card in the pew racks or you can pledge easily and quickly online here.
Thanks be to God and thanks to all who made this promise to the Lord. It’s great momentum toward our hopes for how we can bear witness to God’s love and justice. Let’s let’s keep the momentum going.
Watch for Caldwell This Week on Saturday. In the meantime, please keep members Jermaine Johnson, his grandmother, Frances Smith, and their entire family in prayer. Jermaine’s 20 year old cousin died this week. Also, Neecho Griffin Mosby, who is at home recovering after a stay in the hospital.
Be careful out there Trick or Treating. There be storms afoot!
In Christ,
John
