Reconciliation in Communion

Dear Caldwell,

As the week winds to a close, I am continually grateful for all the MANY ways you demonstrate your discipleship. Even as the clock strikes 5 PM on a Friday, a committee is meeting down the hall working on our ministries with our Latino/a neighbors. Your commitment – in so many directions – never ceases to amaze me.

Some have asked whether the DNC hoopla will complicate getting to church on Sunday. I am not aware of any road closings  that affect the immediate area around the church. So, come ahead.

In worship, we will come back to the subject of our “Reconciling Faith,” this time in the context of the sacrament of Communion. Our reading is John 6:56-69. In it Jesus differentiates the manna that (temporarily) fed the children of Israel from how we are fed eternally through him as the bread of life, a welcomed word in a world so desparately in need of reconciliation. From this lesson we will explore several aspects of how we are reconciled to God and to each other in the Lord’s Supper, which we will also celebrate Sunday.

Another highlight of “first Sundays” each month is the chance to join in the membership of Caldwell. If you have been walking with us and considering making this your church home, the session will meet to receive new members immediately after worship.

Before worship, Adult Sunday school meets at 9:45 a.m., continuing a rich study of what sabbath means in our lives. Breakfast with Caldwell House is served at 8:30 and prep starts at 7 a.m. All hands welcome.

And don’t forget the special service for children Sunday afternoon that previews to the DNC. “Prayers for Children: An Interfaith Call to Action” will be from 3 pm to 4:15 at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church (1117 South Boulevard). National advocate for children Marian Wright Edelman will speak.

Peace to each of you,

John
