Dear Caldwell Family:
Happy midweek to you all. To all those kids and youth and parents who get out of school this week, congratulations! Let the summer begin!
Thanks to those who responded to last Sunday’s sermon. One of those responses echoed a thought that entered – but unfortunately exited just as quickly – my head: We ought to talk about this subject of how the church, the denomination and Caldwell will move forward into this approaching new day of multiculturalism.
So, for all interested, let’s plan to do that this Sunday right after worship. Last Sunday’s sermon focused on how we – the church – will deal with racism, in apology and confession. That issue matters to many folks of color in the denomination, particularly of a certain generation. This Sunday, I’ll focus on another demographic group, the emerging generation in their 20s and 30s. They recognize the sin of racism, but many want the church at large to move forward toward solutions rather than getting bogged down in backward-looking apology.
It’s a fascinating discussion. I’m so grateful that it’s a dialogue we can have without hesitation here at Caldwell, where God has equipped and positioned us to be a multi-colored light in our city.
So, I hope folks of all ages and races can come be a part of the dialogue in the Fellowship Hall right after worship. If it’s helpful, I’ve posted last Sunday’s sermon, the first of two parts, here
To Be a New Church, Part 1: Courageous Confession
And by the way, these blog things 🙂 do allow people to comment – so talk amongst yourselves in the meantime.
Peace and grace,
John
