Dear Caldwell,
The language of “call” plays a major role in our faith and our sense of identity. At last Tuesday night’s session meeting, the elders had the blessing of hearing our elders-elect describe their sense of call to be officers at Caldwell in this point in their lives and the life of the church. Emotions in the room ran from tears to joy as we heard each of these individuals speak of their journeys – journeys with themselves, their loved ones, their self understanding, the church and, of course, with God. It was a powerful experience for all in the room.
When it comes to “call,” especially calling elders, we Presbyterians have our own ways, chuckling at ourselves as we practice everything “in decency and in order.” We elect a committee to nominate elders-elect, who are then voted on by the congregation, followed by extensive training for the job and examination by the session. Hours upon hours go into listening for God’s will in selecting these leaders. Jesus, however, did none of this. Walking down along the coast of the Sea of Galilee one day, he saw two men fishing and he said only, “Follow me.” He saw two more and did the same thing again. Scripture tells us all four “immediately” left their jobs, family and homes and took up with Jesus, without any more explanation. They were, of course, in for the adventure of a lifetime.
Sunday in worship, we take a look at this story as told in Matthew 4:12-23 and reflect on how each of us is called, in our own way, to serve God with all that we are. We will ordain and install our new elders, exchange joys and concerns and hold a brief congregational meeting to review the church budget.
Hope to see you there.
In Christ,
John
