Dear Caldwell,
We’ve all been there.
We’ve put something in writing, in an email, a text or even a letter, only for someone to read it and mistake our meaning. What follows, at least sometimes, is lasting confusion or even resentment that no explanation of what we MEANT to say can solve.
This week, beginning tonight with the Preacher’s Porch, we take a look at a passage of scripture that fits that description. In his farewell remarks to his disciples as recorded in the Gospel of John, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life ….”
Did he mean “I am THE way, THE truth and THE life?” Or was it more, “the WAY, TRUTH and LIFE?” What was his emphasis? What was his meaning? The answer to that question has influenced countless people to draw closer to a God who is for all or to recoil from a faith they interpret as exclusive of other beliefs and ways of seeing God.
We’ll dive into that conversation, one that has long occupied theologians and scholars, tonight at 7 p.m. at the Preachers’ Porch. The full passage is John 14:1-7. Gail and I will co-host on the link in the email you received with the link to this note.
As we travel this week from Sunday to Sunday, we do so well fed by the word and the sacrament we received Sunday, along with the nurture of seeing each other in worship, even if it was just the “chat box” on Youtube. The month of May brings the prospect of more time sheltering at home, but the Spirit is loose in you and all the ways you are looking after each other and those in need in our city.
Don’t forget about Caldwell Live social hour Wednesday at 5:30 and Vespers Thursday at 8 p.m. (Zoom links in today’s email).
May the Lord’s peace and encouragement be with you.
In Christ,
John
