Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. – Philippians 4:8-9
Dear Caldwell,
Paul’s words above spoke to first-century Christians who were on the margins, up against the power of Rome and being persecuted for their beliefs in Christ. But they sure still speak today, don’t they?
I’m amazed at what seems to be such a calm and reassuring tone amidst the challenges they faced. We turn to these verses and a few more tonight (Philippians 4:8-13) as we gather virtually on the Preachers’ Porch. We will look back at last Sunday’s sermon and worship and share our thoughts about these assurances from Paul as we travel through another week on the way to Sunday.
In the assurance of God’s promises, we ask that everyone make their pledge to fund the church budget for 2021. This Sunday is Commitment Sunday, by when we hope to hear from everyone. Read all about that in the box to the left.
This Sunday, in addition to our regular 11 a.m. worship via Zoom, will offer a special supplemental “mini-worship” service outside at church. So many of you have said you yearn to see each other. More and more congregations are finding ways to worship carefully and briefly outside. Bring a lawn chair, wear your mask and come as we celebrate our financial commitments for 2021, receive communion and more while we are socially distanced. This is optional, of course! You can even just come and sit in your car. Watch for more details about this later this week.
We’ll be collecting items Sunday 2-4 p.m. at church (as well as Monday, October 26 11 am to 1 pm) for neighbors served through A Roof Above. Items needed: tuna in pouches, chips in snack size bags, individually wrapped crackers, disposable masks, nitrile gloves size large, lightweight backpacks, tarps (8×10), rain ponchos. Please visit their Amazon Wish list at https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3TGAR7H8GVVFF?ref_=wl_share for more details. Items can be ordered and shipped directly to 945 N College Street. Elder Nominations
As we look ahead to 2021, the Elder Nominating Committee has begun its work of gathering names to be considered to serve as elders, making up the class that will be installed in January and serve for three years. Please prayerfully give thought to those whom you believe would make strong, spiritual and faithful leaders of your church. Contact anyone on the committee with your nomination(s) – Richard Harrison (chair) at 704-705-6652, call or text, along with Meg Haynes, Reg Schloss, Jeanette Hickman and Angela Everitt.
Feed your soul with Philippians and hope to see you on the Porch tonight.
In Christ,
John
